Athletes trying to minimise protein losses and muscle break down might want to consider HMB – particularly during very high intensity periods of training.
Hydroxy Methyl Butyrate regulates protein metabolism as the bio-active component of the branch chain amino acid Leucine.
Research, directed at the effects of HMB supplementation on body composition, illustrated that HMB regulates the enzymes responsible for muscular protein metabolism.
HMB supplementation, in dosages of one to three grams per day, has been shown to significantly increase fat free muscle mass and muscle strength gains, whilst minimising protein breakdown and muscle damage when combined with an exercise program. Ingredients:
Active ingredients: Calcium beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate monohydrate.Other ingredients: Colloidal silicone dioxide (glidant); Magnesium stearate (lubricant); Gelatine (capsules).
Side Effects:
We produce 0,3-1g of HMB in our bodies per day.
Also, HMB occurs naturally in various whole foods like grapefruit and meat. Thus HMB is not a drug, and studies to date suggest no adverse side effects. Excess HMB ends up being excreted in the urine.
HMB is not fat soluble, so you do not have to worry about it accumulating in your body.
Tips:
In our experience taking less than 3 grams a day ( to save on cost for instance ) is not a good idea. We have found that at a dose bellow 3g HMB is not effective.
